Photograph of Koreans trying to protect themselves from CS tear gas fumes during an anti-government demonstration in Kwangju, South Korea. The riot police in the street use mass quantities of CS teargas to suppress dissent. Defensive efforts include goggles and breathing through cloth to cut the effect of the gas. Kwangju aka Gwangju was the site of a massacre of over 200 people by the authoritarian dictator Chun Doo-Hwan in 1980. In 1987 it was site of many violent protests against the government. The anti-government protests eventually toppled regime of authoritarian dictator Chun Doo-Hwan. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken June 20, 1987.
