Photograph of an aggressive student using a sharp metal pole to injure riot police at the gates of Yonsei University in Seoul during an anti-government demonstration. The battle between police and students lasted over four hours and filled the area with tear gas. The police began the violence when they fired teargas canisters at protestors at a rally inside the university. The police used a steel net or fence to defend against rocks and Molotov cocktails hurled at them by the protestors. The student is using the pole to attack through the fence. Protests and battles across South Korea in 1987 eventually toppled regime of authoritarian dictator Chun Doo-Hwan. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken June 15, 1987.
