Photograph of Korean riot policemen cowering and in defensive position with shields after being overwhelmed by protestors during an anti-government demonstration in Seoul. The violent battle between the demonstrators and police was in front of the Bank of Korea. The students fought the police with rocks and Molotov cocktails. The police fought back with tear gas. The students were incited by serious injury of student Lee Han Yol, a 21 year old sophomore at Yonsei University. The death of martyr Mr. Lee ignited larger democracy demonstrations across South Korea that eventually toppled regime of authoritarian dictator Chun Doo-Hwan. Yonsei University was scene of many violent protests in 1987. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken May 10, 1987.
